This is a story sort of near and dear to my heart. I have been a fan of Al’s for a long time. Some of the first CD’s I ever bought were his. This might shock some folks reading this since most of you either have no idea that music wasn’t always digital, or have never seen the inside of an HMV. I dare not mention my Meatloaf – Bat Out of Hell cassette tape.
I got CD’s a way that most may not remember. There used to be a service provided by Columbia Music or BMG… where you bought 1 CD at full price and you got 12 or something for a penny. A PENNY. That’s not even a real thing anymore. Holy SHIT! Any way, I bought a bunch of Weird Al. I had heard a couple tracks from my dad and thought, this dude is hilarious! And I know, he is very polarizing. Either you love him or hate him.
Well as it turns out. People still love him. He has been at it for 30 years. But not till this week did he finally hit a milestone that a comedy album hasn’t been able to do since Allan Sherman’s “My Son, the Nut” in 1963. He is on top of the Billboard album chart! His new album “Mandatory Fun” has sold 104,000 sales.
I have been hitting YouTube and watching the videos that he has put out to go along with his new album and it all makes sense. Argue if you want, but he’s very talented. But it was like he disappeared for awhile. And now I know why. He really blew up when MTV started playing his videos. His songs were great, but when you put a video to it, BAM it was even better. MTV and MUCHmusic no longer play videos. It’s rare. BUT! YouTube plays videos. And by using this new medium, he’s back in the lime light! Even better then before since he’s hit #1, and most of the music is being parodied online already. Why not have the master take a crack at it.
Check out a couple videos below or his page here. Like I said, lots of people don’t like or get him. I say, LONG LIVE THE KING!!
