“Flatliners” – A Film Review
The year was 1990 when Director Joel Schumacher took audiences on a star-studded thrill ride through the afterlife with the smash hit “Flatliners”. Recently in 2017, another glimpse into the curiosity of what awaits us has been given by Director Niels Arden Oplev and brought to life by an endearing ensemble of seasoned up-and-comers.
Flatliners is the story of five medical students, who through a series of experimental procedures of stopping their hearts for short periods to claim first hand accounts of the afterlife, soon becomes infatuated with and even haunted by the what they found on the other side.
Leading this promising cast is the ambitious and charismatic Ellen Page (Juno, X-Men Franchise). Page plays Courtney, a young student terrorized by the past and obsessed with understanding the afterlife. Ellen’s performance was top shelf, in fact everyone’s was, and the entirety of the cast deserves one healthy pat on the back.
Joining the cast is Diego Luna (Rogue One, Narcos), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries), James Norton (Happy Valley), and Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2, Transparent). It would be incredibly wordy and drawn out to actually give each of these actors the praise and accolades they deserve for this film, however in the interest of modesty a simple standing ovation after viewing should do the trick. Terrific job, everyone.
Honorable mention: Kiefer Sutherland makes a notable appearance in the film as Dr. Barry Wolfson, however he does not reprise his role from the original 1990’s film, which would have been the cherry on top, but it was still a welcome addition.
Remakes (or reboots) are a dime a dozen these days, and the unfortunate truth is that the vast majority fall short when compared directly beside their original counterpart. This does NOT hold true with Flatliners. Almost immediately the audience will completely forget that this is a rehashed concept by the way of new intrigue, modern medical science techniques, and enough suspense to keep even the most critical viewers involved until the end.
