“A Christmas Horror Story” – A Film Review

First things first:

1) Bitch you know there are going to be spoilers, you’ve been warned!
2) Let’s give it up for a very special Canadian Flick!

I had the pleasure of sitting down and watching A Christmas Horror Story last night. And at first I didn’t know what I was watching. Mainly due to the fact I didn’t know it was an anthology film causing em to say out loud “none of this is making sense.” It seemed like there were 4 story lines being told at the same time with no real connection. I’m actually a little disappointed with myself that it took so long to catch on, but once I drank the Kool-Aid I was hooked!

It starts out with William Shatner as DJ Dan who is pulling a double shit at the station playing some yule tide tuneage while the stories unfold. This is the “glue” story that encompasses the tales below.

Story 1 – Some teenagers break into their school to investigate a strange murder that happened there a year ago.

Story 2 – A couple and their child go out into the woods to find “the perfect Christmas tree”. But they bring something horrific back with them.

Story 3 – A greedy family (a liar, a cheater, a thief, and a murderer) find that their attempts to ingratiate themselves to a wealthy family member has brought about the wrath of Krampus.

Story 4 – A zombie elf outbreak at the north pole that has a surprise twist ending.

So when I saw the trailer, I went into it thinking that what happens is some one resurrects Krampus and he starts to wreak havoc on a small town and Santa has to come put him back to hell or whatever. IT’S NOT THAT. It’s actually WAY better.

Each of these stories I could totally see as stand alone films. Once I caught on to what was actually going on with the anthology of it all I strapped in for the ride. The effects were really well done. Sure they were pretty over the top, but I think that was done on purpose. Lot’s of gore (limbs and heads being chopped of galore!) and then you add in the Christmas songs and elements, it makes it very sinister.

I felt some of the stories left you with some questions and wanting more… but that could be me over analyzing it. Or the answers were there, I just missed them due to basking in the gore of it all.Out of all the stories I like the concept of Story 2 the most. That one I could totally see as a full length film. They could go more in-depth with the Changelings and why they are on that guys property and develop the relationship with the guy and the “trolls”. It had some really deep disturbing aspects, especially for a parent like myself. They did a great job with it. Stories 1 & 3 were a little weak even though I love ghost stories and the idea of a Christmas Devil is absolutely frightening. Story 4 is great because it gives us a chance to see Santa beat the fuck out of Zombie Elves and I don’t want to live in a world where that’s not amazing. And the ending that pieces it all together. Well done.

All in all A Christmas Horror Story is a fantastic romp mixed with twinkle lights and blood. I could totally see this becoming a Christmas tradition in den of Fear. Check it out and let me know what you think. Hit me up on twitter or email!
